New Zealand’s
North Island

Diving Aboard the Macy Gray
With Sean Kelly
and
UnderSea What We See, Inc.

New Zealand’s North Island offers many strange and beautiful diving opportunities and UnderSea What We See, Inc. is pleased to be working with Skipper Sean Kelly and his wife Coral of “godeepsea” to bring you to the spectacular and unspoiled dive sites of the Bay of Plenty and the Coromandel East Coast.

The waters of the North Island are clear and alive with subtropical and tropical fish such as Golden Snapper, Kingfish, Blue Mao Mao, Packhorse Crayfish, Moray Eels and Stingray. Kelp and coral side by side, rocky cliffs, underwater tunnels and volcanic blowholes provide a spectacular underwater setting. Winter water temperatures can reach 56 degrees Fahrenheit and in the summer months between 65 and 73 degrees Fahrenheit. Visibility ranges from 20 to 80 feet and sometimes more.

Owner skipper Sean Kelly is a PADI Dive Master who has logged over 1000 dives. Sean has spent his entire life on the water, first as a child growing up on Ohakana Island, as a Navy electronics technician, commercial fisherman, and fleet engineer for the America’s Cup yacht Young America. While Coral is a qualified boat captain, she prefers to skipper the office operations and will make sure all trip details are in order.

The Macy Gray was built purposely for Sean two years ago to offer this diving experience. She is 15.8 meters (52 feet) long with close to 40 square meters of diving space. A large cockpit and well-situated cabin provide excellent visibility. While most overnight accommodations are land based the Macy Gray has eight berths below deck that are ideal for overnight divers. In addition to the diving trips the Macy Gray is also used for oceanographic research, seismic survey work and commercial diving.
